What we treat

Whiplash

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden jolt, most often in a car accident. Staying active and following a clear plan gives you the best recovery.

Whiplash

Explained

What is whiplash?

In whiplash, the soft tissues of the neck are strained when the head moves suddenly backwards and forwards. Pain and stiffness often build over the first day or two.

Most people recover well. Gentle movement early on, then progressive exercise, works better than a neck collar or long rest.

Common causes

  • Car accidents, especially rear-end collisions
  • Sports collisions and falls
  • Fairground rides or sudden jolts

Symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Pain into the shoulders or upper back
  • Reduced neck movement
  • Tiredness and poor sleep

Questions people ask

Should I wear a neck collar?

Usually not. Gentle movement helps recovery more than keeping the neck still.

Can you help with an insurance or legal claim?

Please call us to talk it through. We have worked with insurance and legal claims in the past, but it is not our main area of practice.

When can I drive again?

When you can turn your head comfortably to check your blind spots. We will help you get there.
