What we treat

Sciatica

Sciatica is pain that travels from the back down the leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness. It can be very painful, but most people improve with the right care.

Sciatica

Explained

What is sciatica?

Sciatica happens when a nerve root in the lower back becomes irritated, often by a disc. The pain follows the path of the nerve into the buttock, leg or foot.

Most sciatica settles within weeks to months. Physio helps you manage the pain, keep moving and rebuild strength safely.

Common causes

  • A disc bulge irritating a nerve
  • Narrowing around the nerve in the spine
  • Lifting or a sudden movement
  • Long periods sitting

Symptoms

  • Pain from the buttock down the back of the leg
  • Tingling or pins and needles
  • Numbness in the leg or foot
  • Pain worse sitting, coughing or sneezing
  • Leg pain often worse than back pain

Questions people ask

How long does sciatica last?

Many people improve within a few weeks, though some take longer. We track your progress so you know it is heading the right way.

Should I stretch my hamstring?

Not always. Aggressive stretching can irritate the nerve. We will show you what helps.

Will I need a scan?

Usually not. If your symptoms or progress mean a scan would help, we will tell you and explain the next steps.
