What we treat

Hip pain

Hip pain can affect walking, running, sleep and getting in and out of the car. We work out where it is coming from and build the strength around the hip.

Hip pain

Explained

What is hip pain?

Hip pain can come from the hip joint itself, the tendons on the outside of the hip, the groin muscles or the lower back. Where you feel the pain gives us useful clues.

Strength and mobility work is at the heart of treatment for most hip problems, including early arthritis.

  • Weak gluteal muscles
  • Running or training load
  • Long periods sitting
  • Osteoarthritis of the hip
  • Pain referred from the lower back

Symptoms

  • Pain in the groin or the front of the hip
  • Pain on the side of the hip, worse lying on it
  • Stiffness putting on socks and shoes
  • Pain on stairs or after walking
  • A limp

Questions people ask

Can physio help hip arthritis?

Yes. Exercise and education are recommended first-line treatments for hip osteoarthritis, and helping people live with osteoarthritis is one of our areas of expertise.

Why does the side of my hip hurt at night?

This is often the gluteal tendons. Small changes to how you sleep, plus strength work, usually help.

Is it my hip or my back?

Sometimes both. Your assessment will check where the pain is coming from.
